Our hometown is Ely, Minnesota, officially named the Coolest Small Town In America 2010. http://www.budgettravel.com/bt-srv/coolestsmalltowns/CST2010.html We both grew up there during the sixties and seventies ... and what an amazing childhood we had there! We remember our idealistic youth with countless lakes and forests as our playgrounds ... some of it only accessible by foot on trails or portages ... or just by making our own way on our bikes or on foot. Once the coveted driver's license was realized, however, we logged many-a-mile in various family jalopies "Ridin' Around the Lake."
The lovely City of Ely is nestled along the shores of Shagawa Lake. The town itself is along the southern shore, but many residents' homes actually surround the lake and the access road also gives way to homes, cabins and resorts on other lakes as well. The road "around the lake" completely circles Shagawa Lake, so one can leave town on the east end, circle around the lake and enter back into town on the west end or vice versa in about 20-30 minutes time - of course dependant on the urgency of time and if any stops are made - but mostly it is a relaxing joy ride. It is safe to say that all of our youthful dates included one of these rides!
Rich took a ride around the lake on a visit to Ely last fall. Perhaps his millionth or so journey on this rural route ... but he noticed a shed along the way - seemingly for the first time - and stopped to have a look at it through his lense. He then went back the next day after a late-autumn snow fall for another look ...
